's the real problem. i thought it was interesting. vice president biden said he was not concerned about getting guns out of the hands of minute people. well, i'm the same way. i don't think we should take away from good people, law-abiding people, the right to own firearms. , and what we ought to focus on is where the real problem is. you look at some of the plays that have strict gun control. washington d.c. had the strongest gun control law in the country. ofsh the highest murder rate. they understand the issue is the people that pull the triggers on those guns ask trying to keep guns away from them. that's what we ought to be focused on, and the mentally ill part i do consider a productive step that hopefully something will come of. >> haley barbour, thank you very much, governor. thanks for joining us today. appreciate it. >>> coming up next, carolyn mccarthy, a gun violence victim, and one of the strongest advocates on capitol hill as joe biden takes the road on gun violence. and it's the best as i understandoff. tim geithner could have asked for. the market reactions to ed. this i

the announcement? >> he has jack lew. he has joe biden to send up for the all-important relationships on capitol hill. i think this was a legacy pick. the president now has as we know an ambitious agenda that he laid out in the inaugural address. the question is, who is going to protect those goals from him? it's someone he has been with ever since his federal public life has started. that's mcdonough. this is somebody he trusts to protect not just himself. not just the staff, but to move that legacy and the obama era sooner or later will come to an end. the president clearly wants to make the major shape now. i think that's why he picked this man he trusts and has known for so long. >> john kerry ends before the senate foreign relations committee and he will be confirmed. i don't think there is any doubt about that. chuck hagel, that could be a little bit more. >> i think they will rough him up and be more lively than the john kerry hearings. in the end, the numbers. once senator schumer democrat said he answered all my questions, we know there have been meetings with others who have been criti

annoying residue. that's why there's new pam. >>> from macho man biden and the republican renewal to 60 shades of gray. here are today's "top lines." >> you thought barack upset conservatives with his inaugural address? >> he's not looking to moderate. he's be looking to go farther to the left. >> wait until i take the mike and let the gop have it. macho man rodney savage style. >> we have to expand our appeal. >> what are you going to do with macho man joe biden? >> renew our party, grow our ranks, and win elections. >> look at the last election. we are losing dramatically the hispanic vote, which we think should be ours. >> we can't get rattled. we won't play the villain in his morality plays. >> we can't go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows in an illegal status. >> anti-government ideologues. >> sometimes we will have to reject the president's proposals. >> that if you do not believe in government then you will not vote for most things that come up, and they haven't. >> speaking of change, what's up with michelle's bangs? her bangs! what is she,

. control. vice president biden hitting the road to rally support for a new assault weapons ban, said to be tougher than anything we've seen before. but is his own party now in the way of passing that? it's friday. good morn everybody. i'm bill hemmer. welcome to "america's newsroom.". martha: good morning everybody, i'm martha maccallum. this proposal we're talking about was unveiled by senator dianne feinstein. it bans the sale of more than 150 types of semiautomatics and magazines with more than 10 round of ammo. there was a display yesterday afternoon. this bill set in motion after the tragedy of course that happened in newtown, connecticut. >> our weak gun laws allow massive killings to be carried out again and again and again in our country. bill: she says no guns are being taken away. people that have assault rifle will have to secure them. but the bill is facing tough opposition. tucker carlson, editor, daily caller. fox news contributor. good morning to you. >> good morning, bill. bill: in a word do you expect it to go anywhere? >> i do not. for the reason it doesn't address

take it much harder. >> so, chuck, how is joe biden feeling today? >> we're trying to see if they peeled him off the ceiling after he found out this was going to happen. >> the reason the president wanted to do this, and the reason he thought he owed her a public thanks is i got two names for you. john mccain, the other is ted kennedy. ted kennedy was a thorn in jimmy carter's side. kept the party pretty divided in times in the late 1970s. john mccain and george w. bush, very bad relationship in that first term. made getting some things done on capitol hill very difficult. difficult at times for george w. bush to unite his party sometimes, but even unite independents, and what did obama not want? that same issue, and that's why he wanted hillary clinton in his cabinet, in his white house, so he didn't have that. it kept the party united. that's what he was thanking her for more than anything else, which was sort of thank you for keeping the party united and not going to senate, which would have been, you know, think about every moment in the obama first term and what life

by then-senator joe biden, was a watershed moment in our history. in the years since, we have come together in a bipartisan way to re-authorize and expand the reach of this law. now we must do it again. the last congress had the opportunity to take this action. the senate passed a strong bill with a bipartisan vote of 68-31. 68-31. yet house republicans refused to bring the senate's bipartisan bill to the floor, leaving millions without a critical line of defense against domestic violence. this congress has a chance to correct the mistake without further delay. today with 158 co-sponsors and counting, that's in the house, including every woman democrat in the house, democrats are re-introducing the re-authorization of the violence against women act which would expand protections to lgbt, immigrants and native americans. this has bipartisan support in the senate, including key women senators. it is bipartisan. and time for the house republicans to join suit and join the senate in a bipartisan backing of this measure. failure to enact this bill would deprive women and children of vit

on the multinational stage. when vice-president biden said in this chair he said on more than one occasion, good international relationships are always predicated on strong interpersonal relationships. i think we can all agree the you have said the higher standard for developing those relationships throughout your career and as secretary of state you will continue to strengthen those relationships on behalf of the president and the further of american foreign policy. all have some questions later on policies and your views, including how you explain to world leaders how you could have been rooting for the boston red sox instead of what the world knows as the new york yankees as a team of the world, but let me say, mr. chairman, it has been a pleasure working with you and looking forward to continuing to work with you on the issues you're a champion of the years. fighting global terrorism, preventing the spread of nuclear biological chemical weapons, fighting for human rights and against hiv aids to a round the world. fighting crime corruption, drug trafficking, and standing up, as you always hav
